I've done a bit of IM before and, as with many things in life, I'm sure I'd be more comfortable with it if I did it more.
I can definitely see the advantages to it when you are communicating in regards to a document, web page or other collaborative digital media but, for me, an email or a phone call works just as well.
It is pretty neat to use for reference, I've played around a bit with that, not officially but just to see how it works and it is nice to be able to see the website/book record and then referr to and discuss.
My kids love IM, like passing notes when you are on the computer doing your home work.
I'm still pretty old school as far as this goes, I guess, but it is kinda fun.
